Prepare your specialty retail catalog for local product discovery and AI-assisted shopping with accurate variants, stock, attributes, and pickup information.

The useful answer

A discoverable catalog clearly identifies the product, its variants, price, availability, and where and how a shopper can buy it. Local inventory listings and AI shopping channels have separate eligibility and setup requirements. Good data supports discovery; it cannot guarantee a recommendation.

“Find this close to me.” Is your catalog up to it?

A shopper asks for a gift under $50 that they can pick up nearby. Or a particular shoe in their size. Your store may have it on the shelf, but a search tool needs more than a photo and a short title to give a useful answer. It needs the product details, location, and availability.

That’s why we see shopping agents as an opportunity for specialty shops. They give people another way to describe what they need. We help make your catalog clear enough to be considered on eligible channels, while checking which ones actually support local stock and pickup.

What information should you check?

Review representative products across vendors. Check a product with several sizes, one with several colors, an item with limited stock, and a recently received item. Never invent specifications or identifiers to fill a gap.

  • Clear product titles, brand, category, and factual descriptions.
  • Correct variant relationships, option names, images, and identifiers where available.
  • Current prices and quantities at the right locations.
  • Useful attributes such as material, dimensions, color, size, or compatibility.
  • Accurate store details, fulfillment options, pickup expectations, and policies.

How does local product discovery work?

Shopify supports Google local inventory for eligible stores through the Google & YouTube channel. The setup includes location inventory and product approval requirements. It helps make products available for local listings; it is not a promise of placement.

Treat local inventory, your store information, and pickup operations as one customer promise. A discoverable product is only useful if your team can find it and fulfill the order.

What does Shopify do for AI shopping?

Shopify's supported agentic storefronts can make eligible products available to AI channels. Requirements and checkout behavior vary by channel. Shopify's current guidance describes ChatGPT as a discovery referrer to the store's checkout; other supported channels may offer direct checkout.

Review eligible channels, feed health, product detail, and attribution in your own setup. Test the actual customer journey. Catalog readiness is ongoing operational work as new products arrive and stock changes.

Questions from the shop floor

Can you guarantee our store will appear in ChatGPT?

No. We can improve catalog quality, channel setup, crawlability, and useful content. Platforms decide eligibility, retrieval, and ranking.

Is local search the same as agentic commerce?

No. Local listings and AI shopping are related opportunities with different systems and requirements. We assess and test each separately.
