Opening a shop

The systems your specialty shop needs before opening day

A practical opening-day guide to Shopify, POS, product data, receiving, staffing, and customer marketing for a new specialty retailer.

The useful answer

Before opening, a specialty shop needs a working checkout, a usable catalog, reliable stock counts, clear staff routines, and a plan for customer communication. Build and rehearse these together so the floor and website start with the same information.

Start with how your shop will actually trade

Write down your locations, product categories, vendors, sales channels, and fulfillment promises. Decide who receives inventory, creates products, resolves stock differences, and helps customers. Those decisions shape the technology.

Your first delivery is a good place to start. Can someone match it to the order, check the quantities, and find each item in Shopify? Then try a sale and a return. Working through those jobs early shows you what still needs setting up.

Build the catalog before the rush

  • Agree on product naming, variants, categories, barcodes, and image requirements.
  • Record costs and retail prices in the right fields and verify how margins are calculated.
  • Reconcile the opening quantity at each location.
  • Set ownership for missing vendor data and products that are not ready to sell.

Rehearse a real shopping day

  • Sell an item, take a supported payment, and check the receipt.
  • Process a return or exchange and verify the stock change.
  • Place an online order and complete the intended pickup or shipping workflow.
  • Practice a stock discrepancy and a device or connection failure.
  • Check staff permissions, scheduling, and who to contact for help.

Make the first customer relationship count

Offer a clear reason to subscribe to email or text, capture the appropriate permission, and connect the customer record to the purchase where possible. Set up a useful welcome message that explains your shop and what to expect.

Choose a small set of opening measures: stock accuracy, checkout problems, unfulfilled orders, signups with consent, and repeat visits. Review them with the team and fix the gaps while the routines are still new.
